In 2017, the Grayson County Sheriff's Office, the Twin County Drug Task Force and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives identified a drug trafficking organization operating in Grayson County. Law enforcement officials believe that this organization is responsible for the distribution of meth, firearms and stolen property. On Oct. 25, a grand jury in Grayson County issued 119 indictments on 74 defendants. The Sheriff's Office says more arrests are pending and the majority of the indictments will remain sealed until the defendants are arrested.

The investigation into this theft ring will likely continue and more arrests are expected, according to the Grayson County Sheriff's Office. Deputies arrested Michael Phillips, 23, of Sugar Grove, and James Perkins, 42, of Rural Retreat for probation violations. Both were suspects linked to eight break-ins in the Elk Creek and Sugar Grove area. Wythe, Grayson and Smyth county sheriff's offices collaborated on this case.

The Grayson County Sheriff's Office says the body of Joanne Hatcher, 57, from Sparta, North Carolina, was found 3 miles downstream of where she was last seen. She was last seen around 3:45 p.m. Wednesday on the New River near the Virginia and North Carolina state line.
