Kenosha accused shooter’s defense portrays him as ‘American patriot’

This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed without permission.) KENOSHA, Wisc. – Lawyers for Kyle Rittenhouse have launched a social media campaign depicting the Kenosha, Wisconsin, accused shooter as not just a scared teenager acting in self-defense, but an American hero akin to the Minutemen who fought at the nation’s founding. The dramatic rhetoric has helped raise nearly $2 million to pay for the 17-year-old’s defense against homicide charges in the killing of two protesters. But some legal experts say there are risks in turning a fairly straightforward self-defense case into a sweeping political argument that could play into a stereotype that he is a gun-crazed militia member out to start a revolution.

The Latest: UMass to play football this fall, reversing call

(AP Photo/Matias Delacroix)The Latest on the effects of the coronavirus outbreak on sports around the world:___UMass says it will play football this fall, reversing an August decision to postpone the season until the spring. One of few independents in the Football Bowl Subdivision, the school says it will start in mid-October. Games still need to be scheduled, which could be a challenge because most leagues are playing a limited number of nonconference games, if any. UMass was an occasional power in Division I-AA, now known as the Football Championship Subdivision, winning it all in 1998 and returning to the title game eight years later. Results show that “a number of our first-team squad have tested positive for COVID-19.”Those who tested positive will follow government self-isolation guidelines.

The Latest: UMass cancels football, will try again in spring

The Latest on the effects of the coronavirus outbreak on sports around the world:___Massachusetts is the latest school from the Football Bowl Subdivision, college footballs highest level, to cancel its fall season. UMass is an independent in football and its decision affects only that sport. Athletic director Ryan Bamford said the school will try to conduct a football spring season if possible. UMass joined the FBS in 2012 and has not had a winning record since. The Minutemen were forced to try football independence when the Mid-American Conference pushed them out after the 2015 season.
