President Biden offers statement for โBlood Sundayโ anniversary
On Sunday, March 7, 1965, time stopped and blood spilled as brave and righteous Americans sought to cross a bridge named after a Klansman in Selma, Alabama, to reach the other side of justice. Led by the late John Lewis, they marched to secure their sacred right to vote. Their heroism was met by batons and tear gas. They were beaten, but not defeated. Their absolute courage forced America to look in the mirror and Congress to act. Soon after, President Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Bloody Sunday memorial honors late civil rights giants
The Selma Bridge Crossing Jubilee marks the 56th anniversary of Bloody Sunday โ the day on March 7, 1965, that civil rights marchers were brutally beaten by law enforcement officers on Selmaโs Edmund Pettus Bridge. Vivian, and attorney Bruce Boynton were the late civil rights leaders honored on Sunday. Footage of the beatings helped galvanize support for passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Let the people vote.โLowery, a charismatic and fiery preacher, is often considered the dean of the civil rights veterans and led the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Organizers acknowledged the fallen civil rights leaders and planned to lay wreaths at the bridge in their honor.

1976: Actor David Oyelowo, best known for his roles in the movies "Selma," "The Butler" and "Lincoln," is born in Oxford, England. HOLLYWOOD, Calif. - David Oyelowo has gone back in time for other projects, but not like he does in his latest film. The actor, who won critical acclaim for playing Dr. Martin Luther King in "Selma," is starring in the time travel thriller "Don't Let Go." Oyelowo plays Detective Jack Radcliff, a man who begins to receive phone calls from his teen niece after she's been killed. It's a different kind of role for Oyelowo, and he told CNN that was purposeful.
