UPDATE: Two hurt after vehicle fire on I-81 in Montgomery County

UPDATE 9:55a.m. (WSLS 10) - Both northbound lanes on I-81 in Montgomery County are now open and the detour has been removed.

VDOT says congestion is gradually clearing.


Police say the crash happened at about 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning, at the 121.1 mile marker of I-81 northbound. and was blocking the roadway.

A tractor-trailer appears to have blown a tire while traveling in a work zone and hit a work vehicle then caught fire.

Police say there were two injuries and a medevac helicopter was used transport both of the truck's diver and the state worker to the hospital.

Crews continue working to clear the roadway of debris.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY (WSLS 10) - There is an accident on I-81 North causing serious backups.

On I-81 at mile marker 121.1 in  Montgomery County, motorists can expect major delays due to a vehicle fire.

All north lanes are closed and according to VDOT,  traffic backups are about three miles.

All northbound traffic is being detoured at Exit 118.
