ROANOKE, Va. – Yes we are VERY cold here. Yes, we may even see some flurries/light snow showers across...Southside (!) this evening. But, areas south of us are getting pummeled by a rare snowstorm, providing several inches of snow to Houston, New Orleans, and Mobile. Next in line: Savannah, Charleston, Myrtle Beach...and Virginia Beach tonight! But I reiterate: the bulk of this snow will stay away from us.
Cold weather advisory and extreme cold warning areas
The majority of our region falls under a cold weather advisory effective until noon on Wednesday. This advisory spans across much of southwest, central and Southside Virginia. Additionally, areas towards the highest elevations (Grayson, Bath, Highland, Greenbrier, and Pocahontas Cos.) are under extreme cold warnings.
Overnight lows tonight will dip into the single digits. When accounting for some wind, particularly in mountainous areas, it will feel well below zero. Please bundle up, take good care, and bring those pets indoors. This will be one of the coldest nights we’ve had in a long time.
Midweek cold spell and end-of-week warming trend
Looking ahead to Wednesday, temperatures for highs will climb into the mid-to-upper 20s. So, please don’t be fooled by the mostly sunny skies we see. It will be frigid out there! However, there’s a silver lining as the week progresses.
Thursday and Friday bring a little warming trend, with temperatures pushing above freezing and climbing into the 30s. By the weekend, we welcome back the 40s. We look dry here late week into the first part of the weekend under partly to mostly sunny skies. There’s a slight chance for a couple of rain showers late on Sunday as clouds increase...and an increased possibility of some scattered rain and/or snow showers by Monday. We should be dry on Tuesday.
