ROANOKE, Va. – We are tracking cool temperatures for the day as cloud cover continues to roll in. Another front rolls in Wednesday evening and brings rain and freezing rain to some neighborhoods.
Temperatures max out at approximately 40 degrees Wednesday thanks to a switch in the overall flow. Cooler air is funneling into the region from the north.
For the first time in over four years, the National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued an ice storm warning. Freezing rain and ice accumulation is expected across Greenbrier and Pocahontas counties Wednesday night. Winter weather advisories are also in place for the majority of the Highlands.
A couple of isolated showers start to move in around 8 p.m. Wednesday.
By midnight, we are starting to see more rain showers moving through that will bring rain, freezing rain and perhaps some sleet.
Freezing rain accumulation totals will be near a tenth for most along the I-64 corridor, but some isolated areas could see close to half an inch by the time this event is over.
Thursday features warm temperatures, so accumulating ice will melt throughout the day Thursday.
Looking ahead to next week, a shift in the pattern occurs. Near-average temperatures look to return to Southwest and Central Virginia as Winter tries to kick back into gear.
The jet stream pushes slightly to the south as we head into the weekend and brings cooler temperatures. The layout of the jet stream will also bring an active pattern of weather to the region.
