ALLEGHANY COUNTY (WSLS10) - Alleghany County students put to paper their feelings after student suicides and mass shootings hit close to home.

As part of a national project called, Kid Pan Alley, students wrote their own lyrics and put the words to music to express themselves in a positive way.

Thursday evening, elementary to high school students took the stage to perform their recorded songs.

The program has helped more than 40,000 students across the country write more than 27,000 copy written songs.

Organizers say it teaches the kids how to work together and listen to other's ideas.

The Kid Pan Alley project was a partnership between the Alleghany Highlands Arts Council and Alleghany Highlands Community Services Board, with assistance from The Alleghany Foundation.
