RICHMOND – Governor Ralph Northam issued a statement regarding the death of a fallen Big Stone Gap officer and ordered that flags be lowered in his honor.
On Thursday, the flags of the United States of America and the Commonwealth of Virginia will be flown at half-staff in memory of Big Stone Gap Officer Michael Chandler. The flags will remain at half-staff until sunset.
This comes after Chandler, 29, was shot and killed after responding to a residence in Big Stone Gap on Saturday.
In connection to the incident, a 33-year-old man was arrested without incident shortly after 8 p.m. Saturday at the Travel Inn located in the 800 block of Lynn Garden Drive in Kingsport, Tennessee. He is being held on probation violations out of South Carolina and Wise County, Va.

Pam and I were deeply saddened to learn of the loss of Big Stone Gap police officer Michael Chandler, who was killed yesterday in the line of duty. Mike was a dedicated public servant, a devoted husband and father, and a trusted member of the Big Stone Gap community. Like law enforcement officers across the Commonwealth, he put his life on the line everyday in service to his fellow Virginians. And at only 29 years old, he made the ultimate sacrifice.
Please join me in sending prayers to his family, fellow officers, and all who loved him. I’m ordering Virginia flags be lowered on the day of his internment, in honor of Michael Chandler’s memory and sacrifice.
