“This was a heinous act committed by the defendant. He shot an unarmed man three times and then attempted to cover up his actions by placing the body of Mr. Akers in a truck and setting it on fire. Duncan gave no reason for actions and was sentenced the top end of the sentencing guidelines. The sentence will do nothing to bring Mr. Akers back, a man that was deeply loved by his family. I hope that the family of Mr. Akers can now start the long process of healing in the months and years to come. I would like to than the Wythe County Sheriff’s Office and Virginia State Police for their meticulous and thorough investigation of this case,” Jones said.
