Superintendent of Giles County Public Schools to retire after 34-year career

GILES COUNTY, Va. – Dr. Terry E. Arborgast announced that he is retiring as Superintendent of Giles County Public Schools on July 1, 2025.

“I want to announce that I will be tendering my letter of retirement without cause, as the Superintendent for Giles County Public Schools, effective July 1st, 2025. Folks, I appreciate it, y’all are a great group to be associated with,” said Dr. Arbogast.

Dr. Arbogast announced his retirement after 21 years on Tuesday.

Parents, teachers and community members attended Tuesday night’s meeting to show their support.

According to previous meeting minutes, Dr. Arbogast was given a three-year contract extension in August, raising questions in the small community about his decision to step away.

“I want to let the teachers, parents and staff know that I’m sorry for the turmoil and unease you have felt over the last few days, maybe even months,” said Nicole Price, the Central District Representative for the Giles County School Board. “Your jobs are already hard enough without rumors, uncertainty and unanswered questions adding to that burden.”

School board members and Dr.Arbogast were not available for additional comment.

Dr. Arbogast began his service to Giles County as an Assistant Principal at Narrows High School and was later promoted to Assistant Superintendent.

Dr. Arbogast said in a statement:

The past 21 years as Superintendent have been a great run. I appreciate all the staff members and the work. I have strived to be a professional is every conversation with a parent, staff member or student. We may not have always agreed but we have always worked together for the best for out school system. the staff of Giles County Public Schools are an outstanding group with whom it has been a pleasure to work. Giles County has the best teachers and staff and we have accomplished many great things for out students, schools and community.

School Board Chair, Jason Buckland stated:

Dr. Arbogast has served over two decades as Superintendent with the utmost professionalism, dedication and concern for all students and employees. He has spearheaded increased employee compensation, a comprehensive building modernization project and established educational programs that will benefit students and teachers for years to come. As he finishes his tenure his service will be properly celebrated by this system.

Dr. Arbogast will continue to lead the system until his retirement. The board will immediately begin a search for a successor, the county said in a statement.
