ROANOKE, Va. – Bird flu cases have been on the rise recently.
A chicken flock in Accomack County tested positive, and two birds had it at the Metro Richmond Zoo in January.
No one has contracted bird flu in the Commonwealth yet, but doctors still want you to be careful.
Some symptoms of bird flu include fever, cough and runny nose. He said if someone contracts bird flu, they should contact the health department. Then, they should isolate until they don’t have a fever for 24 hours.
With the rising costs of eggs due to the bird flu, 10 News wanted to see how a local coffee shop is holding up.
Owner Adam Ritchie of One Love Coffee Shop said the prices went up dramatically.
“They used to be, for the case that we would get, $12. Now, I think we went yesterday, and they are about $26,” said Ritchie.
Ritchie said at this moment, they are trying to keep prices where they are.
“We will have to increase it if they keep going up, but right now, we will try to stay where they are,” said Ritchie.
One Love Coffee shop sells coffee, egg sandwiches, smoothies, muffins and much more.
Ritchie said a muffin is currently about $3 to $4.
“And so if it gets higher, it’s tough to buy a six-dollar muffin somewhere,” said Ritchie.
10 News asked if there were any alternatives they would consider using, and Ritchie said there weren’t any.
“That’s one thing that you can’t really pop something else into. So, I think that we’re kind of stuck with what we have. And then on our end, it’s the coffee world too. They’re talking about that going up. So, coffee, eggs and milk have been on the rise. So, I think across the board you get a lot of things going up right now,” said Ritchie.
10 News also asked Ritchie his opinion about the possible tariffs.
“We have to pay for them and try not to pass too much on but at some point that does happen,” said Ritchie.
Ritchie said that other businesses are feeling that punch too when it comes to prices.
“It’s already hard enough as a small business to make ends meet every month so as everything goes up, that just makes it more and more, and it’s who’s got a good business model, and if you don’t then you’re gonna be in trouble,” said Ritchie.
