NYC cathedral gunman's note says he planned to take hostages
New York police officers move in on the scene of a shooting at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, Sunday, Dec. 13, 2020, in New York. A man was shot by police after shots rang out at the end of a Christmas choral concert on the steps of the Manhattan cathedral Sunday afternoon. The shooting happened just before 4 p.m. at the church which is the mother church of the Episcopal Diocese of New York and seat of its bishop. The note was first reported by NBC New York. In the note, the law enforcement official said, Vasquez wrote he did not expect to make it home.
Barry Jenkins to direct 'Lion King' follow-up
NEW YORK โ The Walt Disney Co. will make a follow-up to the 2019 live-action โThe Lion King,โ with Barry Jenkins, the director of the Oscar-winning โMoonlightโ and the James Baldwin adaptation โIf Beale Street Could Talk,โ set to direct. The new โLion Kingโ grossed more than $1.6 billion worldwide, so a sequel was perhaps always likely. Less expected was a โLion Kingโ with Jenkins directing. The film, Disney said, will explore the mythology of โThe Lion King,โ including Mufasa's origin story. Disney didn't announce any further plot details or casting on the new โLion Kingโ project, which was first reported by Deadline Hollywood.
Met Opera to hold celebration of Jessye Norman on Nov. 24
NEW YORK, NY โ The Metropolitan Opera will hold a tribute to Jessye Norman on Nov. 24 that celebrates the life and career of the late soprano. Latonia Moore, Eric Owens, Lise Davidsen, J'Nai Bridges and Leah Hawkins are scheduled to perform, the company said Wednesday, along with the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, pianist Mark Markham, composer/pianist Damien Sneed, the Met chorus and the Met's "Porgy and Bess" chorus. Speakers will include Anna Deavere Smith, Gloria Steinem and former French Culture Minister Jack Lang. Norman died Sept. 30 at age 74. She was hailed at the Met for her Wagnerian performances as Elisabeth in "Tannhaeuser," Sieglinde in "Die Walkuere" and Kundry in "Parsifal," and for the title role in Strauss' "Ariadne auf Naxos."
