ROANOKE, Va. – The Star City isn’t necessarily known for movie stars, but an aspiring filmmaker from Roanoke decided to capture his hometown on camera. Michael Fleming directed the short thriller film “Parallax,” which premiered at the Grandin Theatre earlier this month. Fleming shot the nine-minute film on a $300 budget in the Roanoke area, mostly at the Shell gas station on Electric Road near Tanglewood Mall. This was Fleming’s first film, and he is now submitting his movie to several film festivals. “You don’t see very many films being made in Roanoke, even short films,” Fleming said.

Phil started to see light shining through his dad as he told his story at each stop on the book tour. The film documenting the journey through grief to healing resonated at the Austin Film Festival, and Phil walked away as both the audience and industry favorite. A book written in Roanoke leads to a tour across America and now a film favorite in Austin.

The French coming-of-age film “Cuties” is trending on Netflix after it was released earlier this week, but it’s not for the reasons you might think. Since it’s debut on the streaming service’s website, many social media users and even some politicians are calling to #CancelNetflix or for further investigation into its production due to the film allegedly sexualizing young girls. Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas, sent a letter to the Department of Criminal Justice, calling for further investigation of the film’s production and distribution.
