Roanoke woman raises $1,800 to buy diapers for church pantry in need
ROANOKE, Va. โ A local woman learned of a need for diapers and rallied the community to give. Mary Wynne Imhof found out the diaper pantry at Greene Memorial United Methodist Church was running low on supplies. Friends sent money through Venmo and Imhof bought the diapers to donate to the pantry. I kept looking at my phone and would be like, โEric, I canโt believe weโre up to $600, I canโt believe weโre up to $1,200,โโ said Imhof. In all, with the help of friends, Imhof raised $1,800 to buy diapers to donate.
Historic Roanoke church reopens sanctuary after eight months of repairs
ROANOKE, Va. โ The stained glass windows inside Greene Memorial United Methodist Churchโs sanctuary are no longer obscured by scaffolding. The sanctuary, which was built in 1892, reopened for Sunday service after it had been closed for repairs since March. โThere is an energy that was crackling in the sanctuary today," said Greene Memorial United Methodist Churchโs pastor, Rev. "Itโs an enthusiasm and a hopeful feeling as they looked at all we had done in 8 months. Greene Memorial had held its services in its basement and in its lobby while the sanctuary was being repaired.

Historic Roanoke church raising money for extensive repairs
ROANOKE, Va. - Greene Memorial United Methodist Church is one of downtown Roanoke's most iconic buildings, but the historic church has been under reconstruction. "We thought we would go and take advantage of a new option for fundraising, to reach out across the country and across the world through GoFundMe," Waltz said. "We're excited to get back in the sanctuary," Waltz said. Waltz hopes the move to use GoFundMe to fundraise will allow anyone to financially help Greene Memorial continue its historic mission. "The community has changed, the church has changed, but its fundamental role has never changed," Waltz said.
Greene Memorial UMC expands youth mission effort in Roanoke
(ROANOKE WSLS 10) - Dozens of students from all over the country are making the Roanoke Valley home for a week to make a difference for those in our community. Greene Memorial United Methodist Church is hosting a youth mission with 30 groups of students across the nation. The porch looks so much better, look at it, you should've seen it before," said Maurice Woody, the homeowner's nephew. "We went to visit a site before they came and the lady opens the door and she started crying, and she said I feel like I just won publishers clearinghouse," recalls Debbie Brown, Greene Memorial United Methodist Church Director of Discipleship. Two years ago Greene Memorial hosted a youth mission day, so this is the first time students have worked in the community for an entire week.
