Local girl wins Soap Box Derby world championship

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - A local 10-year-old is now a world champion in the Local Stock Division of the Soap Box Derby.

After winning her local race, Annabelle Herron came in first place at the 78th First Energy All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron, Ohio. She got a ring and two trophies, one of which comes up to her neck! Annabell said a friend introduced her to her new hobby.

"A friend got me into it and she really wanted me to go down the track and so i said "fine" and i did it and i really liked it," Annabell explained.

Annabelle said it took her just a few hours to build her car, which is now on permanent display at Derby Downs Track in Akron, where it will stay.

Another interesting fact, her local club, the Star City Soapbox Derby, sent only girls to the the International Soap Box Derby this year.
