ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - Roanoke Fire and EMS is showing the community how to prepare in the event of an emergency. City leaders say know the risk, get an emergency kit and have a plan.

Emergency management suggested creating a kit with items like personal hygiene products, medicine, food, pet supplies and tools. They added if nothing else, have a flashlight and extra batteries on hand.

"In a large scale disaster emergency personnel may be handling the disaster themselves at the impact zone and my not be able to respond to you for period of time," said Marci Stone, emergency management coordinator for Roanoke Fire and EMS. "We say 72-hours knowing that there's a potential you may have to be resilient up to 12."

City leaders also recommend having a safe meeting point for you and your family in case you're separated.
