Roanoke quilting group finds new home in Vinton

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) A volunteer quilting group in Roanoke finds a new place to set up shop after relocating.

Sassy Stitchers says it's all because of a story WSLS 10 aired earlier this month.

On Friday afternoon, the group was moving into its new building at 118 Pollard Street in Vinton. They were bringing in fabrics to make quilts and shelving for their materials and supplies.

They previously operated out of a room for free at the Presbyterian Community Center, but the room will soon have extensive renovations. After seeing the group's story, someone stepped in to help.

"And he called Bonnie and he said 'I have a place, you want to come see it?' Well Bonnie came and had a look. And she said 'oh yeah, this is it.' This felt very home into us and it feels very comfortable and I think we can make it very nice," said Mary Dalton, volunteer.

"And here we do have to pay rent, but that's something we're going to have to figure out how to do. At the same time y'all have been so good to help us get the word out," said volunteer Bonnie McKee.

Sassy Stitchers makes quilts as well as wheelchair and walker cover for places like the Rescue Mission and Salvation Army. They are welcoming anyone to come watch them sew or learn a new skill.
