Graduation ceremony, Roanoke Police Academy Torch Run and more news happening today

Here’s a look at some of the stories we’ll be following today as they make headlines across Southwest Virginia:

  • Patrick Henry High School graduation will take place at 10 a.m. at the Berglund Center. If you can’t make it, the graduation will be livestreamed on the RCPS Facebook page. School officials are reminding guests that balloons, noise makers, beach balls or anything distracting will not be allowed. Security measures will be in place and bags will be subject to search.
  • The Olde Salem downtown Roanoke location is opening for the first time to the public at 11 a.m. Happy Hour will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and sports trivia with Clark will be at 6:30 p.m. at the brewery’s Salem location. The opening is at 315 Market Street.
  • The Giles County School Board will hold a work session to discuss the budget and upcoming projects in the district. The meeting will take place at 1 p.m.
  • Roanoke Police and recruits will have their Roanoke Police Academy Torch Run at 2 p.m. They will complete a 2.5-mile run on the Greenway starting from the small parking lot of Wasena Park to Smith Park. The runs are open to the public, and you will receive a shirt after the run if you registered.
  • Botetourt County School Board will hold a meeting where they will discuss the approval of proposed rates of substitutes, extra duty pay and summer rates of pay. It will take place at 5:30 p.m.
  • The City of Martinville and AEP are slated to hold a ribbon ceremony today at 10 a.m. to acknowledge the completion of the Battery Storage Station project. City and AEP officials will speak during the ceremony.
