Virginia health officials hope Monkeypox messaging will decrease STI rates

Monkeypox is not an STI, but the message of safe sex applies to both

ROANOKE, Va. – Monkeypox continues to travel across the United States

But, Monkeypox is not the only concern for health officials — STI rates have been on the rise.

Though Monkeypox is not an STI, health officials are hopeful that Monkeypox messaging will help bring those rates down.

Many STIs come from unsafe sex practices, similar to one of the ways Monkeypox is transmitted.

Officials hope that messaging surrounding safe sex will slow rates all around.

”We are hopeful that some of the messaging around Monkeypox may have contributed to some decrease in some of our most risky sexual behaviors,” Roanoke / Alleghany Health District Director Cynthia Morrow said.

Health experts continue to encourage those with the highest risk of contracting Monkeypox to get vaccinated.
