Three displaced after house fire in Roanoke County, pets safe, cause determined

ROANOKE CO., Va. Update:

The Roanoke County Fire Marshal’s Office reports that the fire occurred due to combustibles being too close to a heat source. The estimated damages are $75,000.

Original Story:

Three adults have been displaced and a dog and three birds are safe after a house fire in Roanoke County Tuesday.

According to ROCO Fire and Rescue officials responded to to the 6000 block of Poor Mountain Rd in the Ft. Lewis area for reports of a garage fire that was close to the house at 5:01 p.m.

Heavy smoke could be seen in the area and the call was upgraded to a working fire, Police officers from Roanoke County were the first units on the scene and reported that the garage was fully engulfed in flames and that all occupants had been successfully evacuated.

The fire extended from the garage to a single-story wood frame house and it was brought under control in 35 minutes, according to ROCO FD.

10 News has learned that two adults were treated on the scene for smoke inhalation but refused transport to the hospital.

All three adults will be displaced and are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

The scene of the fire was in a very rural area of Roanoke County with a long unpaved driveway, according to officials. Tankers were used from across Roanoke County to bring water for firefighting operations.

The Roanoke County Fire Marshal’s Office is on the scene to investigate a cause and provide a damage estimate.
