Fred F. Forbes III, Mayor of Covington, dies at 63

COVINGTON, Va. – Fred F. Forbes III, the Mayor of Covington, died on March 14, Covington Police told 10 News. He passed away at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital and was 63 years old, according to his obituary.

Born May 8, 1962, in Clifton Forge, Forbes was well known in the community. Before his retirement, he worked for several years as a crew foreman at Lanford Brothers, a bridge repair construction company. In 2022, Forbes was elected to the Covington City Council. About three years later, he became mayor following the death of then-Mayor William “Lance” Carson Jr.

Outside of public office, Forbes enjoyed hunting, spending time in the woods and cutting firewood. He also participated in drag racing and enjoyed driving cars down the track.

A cause of death has not been revealed at this time.
