Backpacking with Brooke: Lake Moomaw

ALLEGHANY COUNTY, Va. – Located in the mountains of Alleghany County, Lake Moomaw is a beautiful place to spend an afternoon.

The entrance to the camp site can be found just before you get to the Gathright Dam. The Morris Hill campground is home to about 20 camping plots, and numerous hiking trails.

The Fortney Loop trail can be found on the back side of the camp ground where there’s ample parking to begin your trek!

Fortney Loop Trail (WSLS)

You’ll come to a ‘T’ in the trail with two favorable looking options. The first part of the hike was pretty flat and in the sun but closed toed shoes would be best considering there was a lot of overgrown brush and downed trees.

It doesn’t take too long before you’ll be met by another intersection and about 20 minutes into the hike, the trail became really overgrown.

After returning to the starting point, Sidney and I decided to choose the other trail. This dumped us back out at the campground.a little further up from where we originally got on the trail. Then it was onto the beach. You will cross over the dam and the road will take you straight to the lake front recreation.

After you make a quick $5 drop in the box, you’ll be well on your way to the most beautiful landscape.

The incredible view and clear blue waters has us already planning our next visit!
