A statewide Burn Ban will go into effect Saturday, this bans open air-burning before 4 p.m. and will be in effect until Apr. 40 and applies to all open-air burning within 300 feet of woodland, the Martinsville Fire & EMS Dept. announced.

The threat for brush fires will be higher than usual through Wednesday.

Another burn ban is in effect now through April 30, as Virginia begins its spring fire season.

Burn bans are being lifted across Southwest and Central Virginia, but the risk remains due to dry conditions.

In light of dry conditions, many areas have already begun enacting open burn bans as those conditions increase fire danger.

The increased risk has led to burn bans in Danville and Pittsylvania County.

Starting at 6 p.m., all open burning will be banned across the county.

The statewide law prohibits open air burning before 4 p.m. within 300 feet of woodlands. According to the Virginia Department of Forestry, 95% of wildfires are caused by human activity. When weather systems pass through this time of year, the relative humidity can drop by a lot afterward. That, in combination with a gusty wind, can act as a fuel for these kinds of fires.
