On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, thousands across the nation are honoring the legacy of the civil rights leader through acts of service. In Roanoke, a group of local volunteers is coming together to make a global impact by packaging tens of thousands of meals for those facing hunger worldwide.

People across the country will come together on Monday to pay their respects to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a dedicated pioneer for civic rights who paved the way for equality, equity and peace for African Americans.

On Monday, the Hill City took a moment to honor MLK with its annual breakfast.

This year is the 8th annual parade hosted by CARE Rockbridge.

Leaders with the Montgomery County Radford City Floyd NAACP Branch are Celebrating MLK Day earlier this year. There's an event happening at the Church on Main Sunday January 14th starting at 3 p.m. Guest speaker is Tameka Paige with the Roanoke City Sheriff's Office and a reception will follow.

The week will have a spring feel at times along with opportunities for showers

ROANOKE, Va – As the United States remembers the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., educators are reflecting on how his messages can impact their students. Marylen Harmon taught in Roanoke County for almost 40 years. She said that while the United States has changed a lot over the years, one of her most important lessons was always sharing the stories of King and his legacy on the African-American community. “I could try to get them to understand what it’s like to be different, what people were standing up for, and to create their own path of justice,” explained Harmon. Harmon also said she would teach her students how to solve problems and have hard conversations based on King’s life story.

Virginia Western launched a virtual day of service where students create messages for seniors, active members of the military and veterans. The day also features a series of virtual events and discussions including a keynote speech by Dr. Judith R. James.

We celebrate Martin Luther King Day around the activist’s January birthday, which is Jan. 15.

RADFORD, Va. – More than 400 Radford University staff, students and faculty are honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy by giving back.
