Pittsylvania Pet Center begins drive-thru pet food pantry
PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. โ The Pittsylvania Pet Center is trying to keep those struggling financially together with their pets. The animal shelter started a drive-thru pet food pantry on Thursday, which will be open weekly on Thursdays from 1-4 p.m.To get food, youโll need proof you live in Pittsylvania County. Shelter employees said 500 pounds of dog food and 100 pounds of cat food were given away Thursday. To donate food to the shelter, click here.
TNR becomes official feral cat policy in Pittsylvania County
PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY, Va. โ Feral cats are a huge burden for the Pittsylvania Pet Center. For the past decade, the countyโs policy has been to round up feral cats and euthanize them. (WSLS)Later this month, representatives from the nonprofit Alley Cat Allies will hold TNR presentations in the county. โTo provide educational resources on what trap-neuter-return is and what a community cat is,โ Alley Cat Allies President Becky Robinson said. As of Monday, the dates, times and locations of Alley Cat Alliesโ presentations had not been released.
Local animal shelters receive $360,000 to save lives
ROANOKE, Va. - Two local animal shelters are receiving $360,000 to help save animals' lives. The Petco Foundation awarded the Pittsylvania Pet Center a $75,000 donation on Tuesday. The center is going to use the money to relocate animals to other shelters to help them get adopted. The goal of the grant is to increase shelters' save rates to 90 percent statewide. On Wednesday, the Galax Carroll Grayson Animal Shelter will receive nearly a $285,000 grant from the Petco Foundation.
