He's replacing Chief Tim Guthrie, who led the department for one year before retiring.

Crawley, who has worked in the department for 16 years, says the most important aspect of the job is maintaining the trust of the people he serves every day.

"We just want to reinforce that we're here to serve our community and that's really important to us that we want to be involved with the community and we have a, the Salem community supports the police department, and we really want to maintain that trust and maintain that standard that the police departments already have," said Crawley.

Crawley also appointed Lieutenant Derek Weeks to serve as Deputy Chief starting next month.

He's been with the department for 15 years.
