RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Henrico County school officials have released possible suggestions for renaming a middle school named after a prominent segregationist.

Media outlets report the 17-page list includes nearly 200 entries ranging from touching tributes to cartoon characters that the public submitted.

In March, the county school board voted to remove Harry Byrd's name from the school following a petition drive and overwhelming public condemnation of the school's name.

Byrd was a politician who fought against the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to end school segregation.

Topping the list is former student Alysia Burton, who received more than 1,600 suggestions. She died on Sept. 11, 2001.

Former school resource officer Neil G. Griffin received over 800 suggestions.

Spokesman Andy Jenks says the school board will ultimately make the final decision, which hasn't been finalized.
