Business owners on edge after latest shooting in Downtown Roanoke

ROANOKE (WSLS10) - One person is dead after a shooting in Downtown Roanoke. It happened near Benny Marconi's, a popular pizza place in the Star City.

Many business owners are shocked a shooting happened because they said downtown is safe. They're hoping the latest shooting in downtown is an isolated incident.

Market Street Vendors in Downtown Roanoke are hoping this latest shooting sparks a conversation about how to resolve conflicts without violence.

"People don't want to solve issues with moral integrity, they want to resolve it or try to resolve it with aggression and with violence and it just can work that way," Al Hubbard, vendor in downtown said.

Police said the victim involved in the shooting passed away Saturday morning.

They're still investigating what led to the shooting, but said it happened around 2:30 a.m.

Investigators believe the shooting was a result of a fight between the victim and the suspect.

"It's sad every time we hear something people are upset for a minute," Hubbard said.

Other business owners are in Downtown Roanoke are wondering what options are there to prevent another shooting in the future.

"My personal opinion the first thing we need to look at are people being over served at that hour on the weekends," Mike Wilson, business owner said.
