(WSLS 10) - Today is the deadline to file for disaster loans from the Small Business Administration for those affected by flooding in September and October of last year. Five straight days of rain was too much for some areas, especially in Floyd and Patrick Counties where flooding destroyed the historic Bob White Bridge. Loans up to $2 million are available for small businesses.

Several communities in southwest Virginia will hold National Night Out events. The annual event promotes police and community partnerships and building safer neighborhoods. Pulaski Police will attend the annual event in Jackson Park. Activities include games, a water balloon battle and a dunking booth. In Vinton, National Night Out events take place at the Vinton Farmers' Market.

Neighborhoods in Roanoke are preparing special events as well. A dozen different apartment complexes are neighborhoods will hold events. Some of those events include a hot dog cookout in Old Southwest, a mini-carnival at Ashton Heights Apartments and the Northwest Neighborhood Environmental Organization will hold a block party.

If you are heading to Valley View Mall, there is a lane closure that could affect your commute. From 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., the right lane of exit 3C at Valley View Boulevard will be closed each day through Thursday to pull and splice cable.

The man charged with assaulting an 81 year old woman, in June, is in court today in Pulaski County for a preliminary hearing. Aaron Sharp, Jr. is charged with felony malicious wounding after police say he pushed the victim to the ground. Police say a witness intervened, stopping the assault and held Sharp until police arrived. The victim was treated at the hospital and released.

Literacy Volunteers of the Campbell County Public Library will hold an open house today for adults needing help with reading and English communication skills. The tutoring service is free and open to those needing help with reading, writing or speaking English. The open house starts at 5:30 at the Patrick Henry Memorial Library in Brookneal.

Patrick Henry Community College holds two open houses today. You can tour the facilities, ask about financial aid and admission and discover the many programs the school offers. The open houses are from noon to 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
