Legendary artist behind 'The Beatles' cartoon comes to Roanoke

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - Fans of The Beatles and classic cartoons are in for a special treat.

Artist Ron Campbell is in Roanoke this week. Many have seen his work on television. He was an animator for "Yellow Submarine" and director of The Beatles Saturday morning TV cartoon series.

Campbell's 50-year career in children's television includes animations for Scooby Doo, The Smurfs, Rugrats, Winnie the Pooh, The Flintstones, The Jetsons, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Rocket Power and more. With a variety of colorful paintings on display, Campbell talked about where his creative ideas come from.

"I have no clue where you get the ideas from? You have to ask God that I guess" said Campbell. "It's just that I think back on the days when I was making a show called, Rugrats, The Smurfs or Scooby Doo and just draw from there."

Campbell is displaying his Beatles cartoon art, as well as newly painted pieces. All works of art are available to purchase.

He will be back at the Wilson Hughes Gallery on Campbell Avenue on Wednesday from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.
