Hokie hockey team asks donors to support their team
BLACKSBURG (WSLS 10) - The Virginia Tech ice hockey team is asking fans to help support their team both on the rink and with funding the program.
General Manager Chris Arnold says a season costs more than $75,000 a year, but the team only receives $8,600 from Virginia Tech because they are technically a club team.
Despite their status, Hokie ice hockey is the third highest attended sport at Virginia Tech.
With no facilities in Blacksburg, the team plays and practices at the Berglund Center in Roanoke at the indoor ice hockey rink.
All players on the team must pay about $1,700 in dues in order to cover uniforms, equipment and travel expenses.
The team has set up a go-fund-me page to help with expenses for the year. The goal is to raise at least $5,000.
The Hokies held their season opener Saturday night against Cincinnati.
