BEDFORD COUNTY (WSLS 10) - A Bedford County home is a total loss after a fire on Wednesday morning.
Both occupants and a dog were able to safely get out of the home. The owner received some minor injuries while trying to extinguish the fire, but they did not require medical treatment. Both persons are staying with friends.
At about 6:15 a.m., the Bedford E-911 Center received a call from a resident of 1150 Tulagi Road in the Stewartsville area of the county, reporting a fire inside his home.
The Stewartsville-Chamblissburg and Bedford Volunteer Fire Departments, along with EMS personnel from Bedford County Fire & Rescue responded.
The first Stewartsville truck arrived at 6:33 am and reported that the structure was fully involved. Additional fire units from Blue Ridge, Hardy and Moneta were then sent to assist.
Due to the age and construction style of the home, it took firefighters over an hour to bring the fire under control and it required several additional hours of work to fully extinguish the fire.
Investigators from the Bedford County Fire Marshal's Office were on the scene throughout the morning. Although the fire likely started near a chimney in the living room where a woodstove was in use, the extent of the fire damage to the home kept investigators from being able to identify the specific cause of this fire.
