Home delivery of baby boy leads to Red Cross Hereos

ROANOKE COUNTY (WSLS 10) - One Roanoke County baby and mom have a crew to thank for his safe delivery.

This year's Red Cross 911 Dispatch Hero and First Responder Heroes are credited for helping deliver one precious little boy.

On January 23, 2016, with a foot of snow on the ground, Lindsey Dodson told her husband, Jacob, she was having contractions.

With no time to get to the hospital, Jacob called 911.

Dispatcher Nikki Crush answered the call and quickly realized dad may have to deliver his own son.

"I just wanted him to be prepared in case he was going to be the one to have to deliver," Crush explained.

She dispatched paramedics Jeremy Edwards and Blake Alley to the scene.

Despite all the snow, they made it to the house pretty quickly.

Within minutes of getting Lindsey out of the bathroom and to the kitchen floor, the paramedics delivered Lukas.

"This job there is a lot of death and it's bad, bad, bad, so it's nice to have a good occasion every once and a while to help make the bad not so bad," Edwards said.

"I definitely feel a connection to the baby and the family," Alley explained.

Since Lukas' at home delivery, Jacob has started volunteering with the fire department to help others in their time of need.
