Case of Roanoke man charged after death of Army veteran moves to a grand jury

ROANOKE, Va. – A 22-year-old Roanoke man appeared in court Thursday on DUI and manslaughter charges in connection with the death of an Army veteran.

Evan Sarver is accused of killing 71-year-old Walter Ashley after police say Sarver hit him with his car and then drove away from the scene.

Sarver later turned himself in.

Ashley's wife says he was walking home from the hospital when he was hit on Williamson Road late at night.

Thursday morning, Sarver told a judge he wants to waive his right to a preliminary hearing, so the case will now move forward to a grand jury.

The grand jury will meet Oct. 6.

Sarver is not in jail at this time.
