Radford Police Department competes for $5,000 grant

RADFORD, Va. – The Radford City Police Department needs your vote to receive a $5,000 grant for its K-9 department.

The department and its K-9 colleagues, including Max, are competing in the 2017 Aftermath K-9 grant competition. A total of $15,000 worth of grants will be given to five police departments.

The Radford Police Department is looking to win the first-place slot, for $5,000.

According to Aftermath’s website, “The K-9 grant was founded to showcase, support and reward the unique contributions made by law enforcement and their K-9 units across the country.”

The money allotted to the K-9 fund will help with the daily costs and upkeep of the man’s best friend patrol. That costs includes food, veterinary expenses, training and specialized equipment.

"Having a K-9 is an expensive part of law enforcement, but it is also an essential part of law enforcement," Lt. Andy Wilburn said. “The ($)5,000 not only helps us, it really helps the community.”

Max, the K-9 drug dog (sniffer) has found around $40,000 worth of drugs and paraphernalia over the past two years. His K-9 colleagues have sniffed out additional amounts.

“Max is a drug dog that costs the department close to $1,800, and he has paid for himself and more,” Wilburn said.

The voting process began on Oct. 11, and closes at 11:59 p.m. on Nov.7.
