ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. – Police are giving advice about what people should and shouldn’t do when officers pull them over. Virginia State Police say there’s a growing concern nationwide with how people are interacting with officers.
Virginia State Police public information officer Sgt. Rick Garletts has pulled a lot of people over. He took WSLS 10’s Tommy Lopez for a ride in his police vehicle this week.
They saw many cars speeding and aggressively changing lanes. Garletts says police will always have a reason to pull you over.
He says it’s always helpful to keep your hands where the officer can see them and not make sudden movements. Also, tell the officer if you have a gun in your vehicle.
He says there’s no reason for people to be combative.
“If you argue with the officer, you're still getting a ticket,” he said. “You're going to have to go to court anyway. Just accept that's why you get your day in court.”
