Averett helps give Danville WWII veteran special birthday celebration

Andy Waggoner to fly Averett plane this weekend

DANVILLE, Va. – A special birthday celebration will take place in Danville on Saturday for a World War II veteran.

Andy Waggoner was a bomber pilot for the Navy during World War II.

He had a private plane of his own that he flew until he was 80, when he had to sell it.

He hasn't flown since, but that will change Saturday.

To celebrate Waggoner turning 97 in May, the woman who helps take care of him coordinated with Averett University and got the university to allow Waggoner to fly one of the university's planes.

Waggoner said that even though he hasn't flown in years he's not nervous.

"When you get in your car, is it a challenge?" Waggoner asked. "I've been getting in and out of airplanes for a long, long time. Same thing."

As of Friday, he hadn't decided how long he would fly.
