Johnson's tears for a green jacket and major validation

Johnson grew up about an hour away in South Carolina, and the Masters is the one major every Southern kid dreams about winning. Johnson already had become owner of a label not talked about enough: The best player to have only one major. He went from a 12-foot eagle putt for the win to a three-putt par to finish one shot behind. And then he delivered the key shot, an 8-iron down the slope to a pin tucked on the corner shelf. It will be the shortest time any Masters champion gets to keep the green jacket with him.

Zach Johnson, normal guy from Iowa, wins Payne Stewart Award

He won as a rookie and reached the Tour Championship in Atlanta, where one of the perks was attending a ceremony to watch Jay Haas accept the Payne Stewart Award. As it enters its second decade, the award now is regarded as the most prestigious on the PGA Tour. PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan referred to Johnson as a fearless underdog and a statewide hero in Iowa for his charitable work in his home state. Zach would say hes just a normal guy from Cedar Rapids, Iowa, but in truth, he has one of the most compelling stories on the PGA Tour in the last 25 years, Monahan said.

Chill vibe of Hilton Head hides urgency for PGA Tour players

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. The ambiance of Hilton Head doesn't change, a most peaceful setting among shade of oaks along the Calibogue Sound. Adding to the serenity this week is the absence of spectators for the second straight week on the PGA Tour. I need to have a few good weeks here to kick off this restart, but I haven't played a lot of golf, Johnson said. It was an eerie feeling for five-time champion Davis Love III, playing Hilton Head for the 31st time. But when the U.S. Open moved to September and the Canadian Open couldn't be played, there was room for Hilton Head.
