Interstate 81 partially reopens after hazmat spill in Wythe County

WYTHE COUNTY, Va. – Interstate 81 is now open again in both directions in Wythe County after a hazmat spill Wednesday afternoon, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The spill happened at mile marker 80, near the exit for Fort Chiswell and Max Meadows.

As of 6:26 p.m., traffic backups are approximately 5 miles in both directions, according to the Virginia Department of Transportation.

All northbound traffic is being detoured at Exit 80, while all southbound traffic is being detoured at Exit 81. Traffic is being detoured off of I-77 North at Exit 32.
