ROANOKE CO. (WSLS 10) - Roanoke County Police, as well as the Virginia State Police bomb squad, have discarded an apparent hand grenade that was found in front of a residence's front yard. 

According to police, the homeowner called dispatch at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 1, 2015 stating they were doing yard work and noticed what appeared to be a hand grenade in their front yard located in the 5700 block of Meadowcrest Street. 

Roanoke County Police Department responded to scene shortly after the call and determined that the object did appear to be an older, heavily rusted hand grenade.

Officers set up a perimeter and attempted to evacuate residents in the immediate area. Virginia State Police responded and took custody of the grenade and discarded it. 

A County K-9, trained in detecting explosives, was utilized. Police say there was no indication of any other devices around the property.

There was determined to be no other threats and police cleared the scene at approximately 11:00 a.m. Wednesday. 

Neighbors are allowed to return to their homes.
