Federal money available to fight opioid epidemic

ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - Federal money is now available for local organizations working to fight the opioid epidemic in our communities.

The U.S. Department of Justice is now taking applications for the CARA grant.

President Obama signed CARA or comprehensive addiction and recovery act into law last year.

This is the first major federal addiction legislation in 40 years, and the most comprehensive effort undertaken to address the issue.

CARA authorizes over 181-million dollars each year in new funding to fight the opioid epidemic.

That money is available for state and local government agencies.

Application deadline is April 25.
