Dozens gather for Field of Honor closing ceremony in Danville

Field honors local military personnel, first responders

DANVILLE, Va. – Danville's Field of Honor is now officially closed for the year.

A closing ceremony was held Tuesday afternoon.

The field is made up of hundreds of American flags, with each one representing a local veteran or first responder.

Each flag costs $40 and is paid for by a business or individual.

The Danville Rotary, which sets up the field, uses the money for scholarships.

The flags go up a few days before Flag Day and stay up until July Fourth.

"Let us focus for just a moment on how blessed we are as Americans," said Danville Mayor John Gilstrap.

"It is my hope that every citizen of this community took the opportunity to stop and gaze at these flags," said Danville Councilman Sherman Saunders.

This is the third year the field has been set up.
