National Night Out Against Crime in Lynchburg

Annual event is meant to spark dialogue between police and neighborhoods

LYNCHBURG, Va. – It’s National Night Out Against Crime across the country. On Tuesday night, officers with the Lynchburg Police Department are out socializing with community members.

In the past, each neighborhood watch group hosted its own event for its community, but this year officials wanted to make the get-together bigger, so everyone was invited to Miller Park. Lynchburg police say the annual event is meant to spark dialogue between law enforcement officers and neighborhood residents.

“Typically, neighborhood watch is the eyes and ears in their communities. So Night Out Against Crime they get to see the chief. They get to see the command staff. They get to see city officials a lot of folks they don't always see. So there's a whole lot more information shared, tips that we get and just good communication,” Steven Wood, of the Lynchburg Police Department, said.

The event will last until 8 p.m. tonight.
