School accreditation statuses for 2017-2018 are based on achievement results from the 2016-2017 school year. Those statuses will be announced mid-September.

Compared to the 2015-2016 school year, there was a one-point percentage drop in the science and math pass rates overall. Reading scores remained the same, at 80 percent passing. English writing improved by two points, with 79 percent passing. History and social science scores were unchanged.

The Department of Education looks at overall numbers, but also breaks results down into these categories: Asian, black, economically disadvantaged, English learners, Hispanic, students with disabilities, and white.

Black students achieved a one-point gain in overall reading. Black fifth graders made an impressive four-point gain, with 71 percent passing.

While overall black achievement in math dropped one point to 66 percent, the performance of black students on the both 6th grade and 8th grade math tests improved by one point, to 70 percent and 60 percent, respectively.

Seventy-one percent of Hispanic students passed the reading SOL, the same as last year. Hispanic students dropped one point in math overall, but gained one point in Algebra I.

Of the 1,805 open public schools with reportable test results, 37 percent improved in math, 44 percent in reading and 22 percent improved in both subjects.
