Roanoke police get scruffy for a good cause

Police officers grow beards to raise money for American Cancer Society

ROANOKE, Va. – You may have noticed police officers of the Roanoke City Police Department looking a little different lately.

That's because the men are growing out their beards, but it's all for a good cause.

The police department is raising money to help assist a retired police officer who has been diagnosed with cancer.

The money they're donating will help the officer with medical assistance. Any male officer who grows a beard will donate at least $20, and the female officers are allowed to paint their nails any color they want for the same donation amount.

“This department lost one of our mentors who was a well-known and respected detective. Unfortunately, he passed away of cancer, so this is also dedicated to him, because cancer has affected our blue family here,” officer N.D. Comas, at the Roanoke Police Department, said.

Officers hope to raise more than $2,000.
