Weapons, homemade explosive devices found in Henry County home search, authorities say

Deputies were making an arrest when they noticed weapons inside of the home, the Sheriff said

BASSETT, Va. – Henry County authorities found homemade explosive devices and several weapons in a home when arresting a man on Tuesday.

On Tuesday around 10:10 p.m., Henry County authorities said they were arresting Barry Witt in the Bassett area for two outstanding warrants for contempt of court.

The Sheriff’s Office said when they were arresting Witt, the deputies noticed a weapon in the residence, which they say Witt is not qualified to have.

Officers issued another warrant for ‘Purchase, Possess, Transport Firearm by a person Involuntarily Committed,’ then obtained a search warrant for the home, the Sheriff said.

Several weapons were found during the search, authorities said, along with three items they believed to be explosive devices.

Virginia State Police was called to assist with the devices, and State Police Bomb Technicians safely removed them before defusing what authorities said were homemade explosive devices.

Witt is being held at the Henry County Adult Detention Center with no bond, authorities said.

The Henry County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation is ongoing and that Witt will likely face other charges in connection with the incident.
