On Friday, Danville Utilities warned its customers of someone going door-to-door impersonating an energy specialist working for their company.

We’re told the person tells the resident that if the home qualifies, solar panels can be installed with no up-front costs. Then the person says there is a program that has cheaper rates that never rise.

Crews said after that, the person offers to prepare a report based on the home’s average utility bills.

Danville Utilities reiterated that the person does not represent the company, and that utility employees do not go door-to-door or ask you to provide information about your utility bill.

Customers are being reminded that if a Danville Utilities employee or contractor needs to go into your home or to review an issue, an appointment will be made ahead of time, and proper identification will be provided.

As a rule of thumb, crews said to not give personal or financial information to a visitor or caller you don’t know.

You can always call the Danville Utilities office to verify if someone is a representative of the company at 434-799-5155. If the person is an imposter, you’re asked to contact Danville Police at (434) 799-5111 or the county Sheriff’s Office immediately at (434) 799-5135. If it is an emergency, call 911.
