VSP identifies victim of fatal Wythe County crash as 28-year-old Pennsylvania man

WYTHE COUNTY, Va. – UPDATE

Virginia State Police is releasing more details about a crash on I-81N in Wythe County that left one person dead.

Authorities have identified the victim as 28-year-old Isaac J. Petersheim, of Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

The crash happened early Thursday morning at about 1 a.m. at the 70.1 mile marker.

We’re told Petersheim was driving a 2011 Peterbilt tractor-trailer when he ran off the side of the road and hit a 2012 Volvo tractor-trailer that was parked on the shoulder. Police say the tractor-trailer overturned over the guardrail.

Petersheim was not wearing a seat belt and died at the scene, according to VSP.

The driver of the Volvo, Edward N. Opoku, 45, of Hammond, Indiana, wasn’t hurt in the incident and had been wearing a seat belt.

Opoku has been charged with improper stopping on a highway.

The crash remains under investigation.
