Historical marker unveiled in Roanoke for Henrietta Lacks

This tribute is located near her birthplace in Perry Park

ROANOKE, Va. – In Roanoke’s Perry Park, there’s now a historical marker honoring Henrietta Lacks.

Lacks has been nicknamed “the mother of modern medicine.”

Her cells were collected without her consent, and are some of the most commonly used cells in medical research.

This new tribute is located near her birthplace in Perry Park and was sponsored by the Carilion Clinic Foundation.
