Prevention education program keeping children safe in local schools

Safety when heading back to the classroom is a top priority for many.

That’s why Children’s Trust has a prevention education program to help students identify unsafe situations.

Speak Up Be Safe is a research-based program that teaches Kindergarten through 5th graders what to do in those scenarios.

“A lot of the times, children will report to safe adults that are not necessarily parents or caregivers within the home,” Sydney Coyner, education facilitator at Children’s Trust said. “They will actually identify safe adults around them, that could either be a teacher a school counselor, or a principal.”

Children’s Trust will head to Roanoke County Public Schools next month to teach the prevention curriculum. They also plan to attend Roanoke City Schools.
